Women in Security Network UK event highlights importance of empowerment

TAKING PLACE on 20 October in London’s Docklands, the Women in Security Network UK event served to highlight the importance of empowering women in the security industry. Hosted by Diane Marchena at HSBC’s offices in Canary Wharf, the gathering brought together over 140 women from across the security industry such that they could engage in meaningful discussions on purpose-led leadership and personal safety.

In truth, the event was more than just a conference. It was also a celebration of connection, collaboration and a collective drive to create a safer and more equitable environment for females and the communities they serve.

The line-up encompassed inspirational women operating in the business and security domains. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, delivering compelling speeches rooted in energy, passion and confidence. Despite varied approaches, all shared a standard message: the necessity of purpose-driven leadership and the urgent need for change within the industry.

Conference heard from Emma Kay (Walksafe), Smita Niranjan (Interr), Colleen Harris (Portmarnock Group), Saskia Garner (The Suzy Lamplugh Trust), Sophie Malone (Zinc Systems), Chantal Anabtawi (Ocular), Ruth Sharman (Carlisle Support Services), Sarah Walker (Safer Business Network) and Gaby Price (Women’s Aid, Luton).

The event emphasised the truism that feeling safe is a foundation for success and overall well-being. When women feel protected, they are more empowered to lead, innovate and contribute to their communities. The collective efforts of these trailblazing females are forging a future where security is rooted in purpose, collaboration and proactive prevention.

Back to the beginning

The journey began over three years ago at The Folly in London, where 35 women convened with no predetermined agenda: only a shared understanding of the value of connection and empowerment in their industry.

From that initial meeting, a ripple effect was then set in motion, inspiring a series of events that have deepened bonds, shared insights and imbued a unified commitment to growing the presence and influence of women in the security domain.

Women in security see it as their mission to be at the forefront of transformation. They recognise that a safer environment is fundamental to thriving both professionally and personally. With alarming statistics related to gender-based violence and domestic abuse, these women are driven to raise awareness and implement measures that protect everyone.

By leveraging technology (such as incident reporting platforms, threat mapping and data analysis), the overriding aim is to prevent harm and ensure safety in workplaces, public spaces and during travel.

Through their leadership, the women of the Women in Security Network UK are demonstrating that change is not only necessary, but achievable. Their passion and drive for equity and safety serves to set a new standard: one where communication, connection and shared purpose underpin meaningful progress.

As they continue to spearhead initiatives and inspire others, the industry stands to benefit from a more diverse, inclusive and secure environment for all.

Shaping the future of security

The London event promises to shape the future of security. These women have firmly put their stake in the ground, advocating for a world in which everyone can feel safe at work and in life and can thrive. Their dedication is a catalyst for lasting change that will resonate across the industry for many years to come.

The key players in shaping the vision are Sarah Jane Cork, Liz Lloyd and Emma Harris, all of whom recognise that women connect, collaborating and communicating empowers and uplifts all those involved.

Upcoming events include the Christmas Markets, which will provide an opportunity to share the festive season. This will be followed by an event at The Old Library in Digbeth, Birmingham on 5 March in celebration of International Women’s Day. Further events will be signposted on the website.
