Full independence for Skills for Security in wake of BSIA shares sale

SKILLS FOR Security – the UK’s largest provider of fire, emergency and security systems apprenticeships – has confirmed that the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has now sold its remaining 49.9% shares in the business. Full ownership of Skills for Security now resides with The Banks Foundation Ltd led by Simon Banks.

Simon Banks first acquired a 49.9% stake in Skills for Security back in 2022. Since then, Banks and the team members have introduced greater structure to the business and are shaping a long-term vision centred on their ongoing commitment to apprenticeships and the fire and security business sectors in general.

The news marks a major milestone for Skills for Security, which has grown rapidly over the last five years, training more than 3,500 apprentices across the UK, while in parallel expanding the team to 75 members of staff, adding seven new Training Centres and launching the Skills On Demand digital learning platform purpose-designed to support Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Indeed, this milestone concludes a successful multi-year journey in which Skills for Security has flourished under the BSIA’s stewardship and investment and, more recently, the expert guidance provided by The Banks Foundation.

Ongoing partnership highlights

With the transaction now complete, Skills for Security will continue to work closely with the BSIA as an important strategic partner. Going forward, both organisations have affirmed their commitment to raising standards and developing future talent across the industry.

Leading training provider

David Scott, managing director of Skills for Security (pictured above, right, with Simon Banks), said: “Becoming fully independent is an exciting milestone for Skills for Security. With The Banks Foundation Ltd’s continued backing, we’re committed to making sure the whole team shares in the growth and success of the organisation, providing all staff with the opportunity to benefit as we move forward.”

Martin Watson, chair of the BSIA, added: “Skills for Security has established itself as a leading training provider with a strong platform for future success. Although our shareholding has ended, we remain committed to working collaboratively with the organisation on initiatives that support the development of skills and future talent for the security and fire industries.”

This strategic move allows the BSIA to focus on sector-wide advocacy and representation, while Skills for Security accelerates its growth and investment in training infrastructure. Together, both organisations will continue to strengthen the UK’s security industry.
