THE ASSOCIATION of University Chief Security Officers (AUCSO), the leading organisation for security professionals working in the higher and further education sectors around the world, has issued a final ‘Call to Action’ and reminder to interested members who have yet to register for the upcoming Annual Conference at the end of this month.
Due to COVID restrictions since March 2020, the 2022 AUCSO Annual Conference and AGM will be the first face-to-face edition of the event since 2019. It’s being held at the University of Leeds on Tuesday 29 March through until Thursday 31 March 2022 and is open to both members and member institutions alike.
There’s an academic schedule lined up for the conference complemented by evening networking opportunities for all. There will be a welcome event and dinner on the Tuesday evening and an evening reception and dinner on the Wednesday. At the gala dinner on the Thursday evening, the winners of the AUCSO Awards will be announced.
The conference will also boast over 40 industry exhibitors. This is the largest AUCSO exhibition to date. As part of the event there will be three key charities exhibiting: Crimestoppers, The Suzy Lamplugh Trust and ProtectED.
Speaker line-up
An impressive line-up of speakers includes Nicky Old, director of communications and external relations at Universities UK. Old leads the in-house team covering media engagement, Government and political affairs, social media and digital content, events and conferences, and also takes care of AUCSO’s public campaigning activities in a pro bono capacity.
Paul Fullwood is director for inspections and enforcement at the Security Industry Authority (SIA). He joined the SIA after a 33-year career with the police service, having previously served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
Fulwood retired from policing in 2020 as Assistant Chief Constable for Bedfordshire Police, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Constabularies. Now, he continues to provide support across UK law enforcement as a College of Policing associate and advisor.
Another speaker at the event is David Rubens, executive director at The Institute of Strategic Risk Management. Rubens is a recognised authority on the strategic management of complex events, and particularly so within a multi-agency crisis management framework. He’s also the CEO of Deltar Training Services, where he has developed a range of UK accredited strategic risk and crisis management training programmes.
Next big risk
Commenting on the conference programme, AUCSO chief operating officer Julie Barker explained: “We are very much looking forward to our first in-person conference since 2019. It will be great to see old colleagues and friends and meet new ones as well. We have a jam-packed itinerary including keynote speakers from within the university and security sectors, break-out sessions, an evening social event at The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and a Gala Dinner and Awards evening at Aspire Leeds.”
Barker added: “One of the key areas we will be focusing on at conference is how the UK’s higher education sector can prepare for the next big risk. The event is not to be missed. We’re excited to be hosting our biggest exhibition to date and delighted to be joined by our charity partners Crimestoppers, The Suzy Lamplugh Trust and ProtectED. Each of these charities has a focus on the safety, security and well-being of students. On that basis, they’re a perfect fit for our Annual Conference.”
