The Security Institute plays key role in protective security apprenticeship

THE SECURITY Institute has signalled its involvement in the development of the new Protective Security Advisor Apprenticeship, itself a “pioneering qualification” that aims to enhance national security capabilities through professional training and development.

This new apprenticeship has been created by a Trailblazer Group composed of key stakeholders from Government, business, academia and the security world.

In fact, the initiative has been spearheaded by representatives from the National Protective Security Authority, the National Cyber Security Centre and the National Authority for Counter-Eavesdropping.

The Security Institute has been actively engaged in this collaborative effort, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to professionalisation, influence and the continued development of security professionals.

Approval secured

The new qualification standard has successfully secured approval from the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, with the occupational standard and endpoint assessment plan now officially endorsed. The final stage (ie securing Apprenticeship Levy funding approval) is anticipated to be completed by the mid-point of this year, at which juncture the qualification will become fully accessible to aspiring protective security advisors.

The Security Institute has committed to serving as a central hub for core information relating to the Protective Security Advisor Apprenticeship and is set to run its first ‘’open explainer’ on the 12 February with further closed consultations involving the Register of Chartered Security Professionals and The Security Institute’s membership following in March and April.

This initiative aligns seamlessly with the Institute’s three pillars of progression: membership, professionalisation and influence. By supporting this qualification, the Institute continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of the security profession, ensuring that individuals working in protective security roles have access to high-quality training and professional recognition.

Structured and converged approach

Professor Simon Hepburn, CEO of The Security Institute and a constituent member of the Trailblazer Group, commented: “We are proud to support this important initiative, which will provide a structured and, most importantly, converged approach and pathway for individuals seeking to develop their careers in the protective security domain.”

Hepburn added: “This apprenticeship is testament to the collaborative efforts of Government, industry and academia in enhancing national security through professional development. We encourage all interested parties to remain informed through our official channels.”

Further updates on the status of the Protective Security Advisor Apprenticeship, including final funding approval and launch details, will be available on The Security Institute’s website in due course.
