The Security Institute named SABRE scheme operator by BRE

THE BUILDING Research Establishment (BRE) – itself a world-leading building science centre – is entering into a partnership with The Security Institute (the UK’s largest professional membership body for security practitioners) in relation to the SABRE certification scheme.

SABRE is an award-winning security risk management standard for new and existing buildings and infrastructure projects. As part of the agreement, The Security Institute will lead on the delivery of SABRE assessor training and licensing, in addition to administering the registration of those facilities undergoing SABRE assessment.

BRE Global Ltd – which is part of the BRE Group – will retain the certification responsibility for SABRE and continue to list certified SABRE assessments on Red Book Live.

The news marks a strategic move by the BRE to ensure that SABRE is well-placed to develop further and increase its influence in an industry which is rapidly developing.

Dr Shamir Ghumra, head of building performance services at the BRE, commented: “This move is a natural next step for us as we ensure SABRE is poised for future growth. The Security Institute is perfectly positioned to support us in our ambitions and we very much look forward to seeing SABRE grow and strengthen to help more organisations showcase their commitment to security. This is paramount as national security becomes increasingly more important.”

Peter Lavery FSyl, chair of The Security Institute, observed: “The Security Institute is delighted to be partnering with the BRE to bring the SABRE standard to a wider audience. In doing so, we aim to transform the way in which security risk management is applied in the design, construction and operation of the built environment.”

Lavery continued: “Becoming the scheme operator for SABRE supports our wider mission to inspire, inform and influence professional excellence. It also enables us to create new opportunities for professional development for our members and to raise the profile of the discipline of security in the design and operation of buildings.”

Threat landscape

In today’s world there’s an ever-changing threat landscape, an increasing focus on environmental, social and governance frameworks in the Boardroom and legislation on the horizon in the form of the Protect Duty.

“On that basis,” asserted Lavery, “it has never been more critical that those responsible for managing risk have robust tools at their disposal to help them discharge their legal and social obligations. SABRE, and the industry-recognised third party certification provided by the BRE, will help to ensure that The Security Institute remains ahead of the curve in addressing these challenges in the years to come.”

SABRE is a world-leading security risk management standard for new and existing buildings, infrastructure assets and managed space. The scheme provides industry with a framework that can be used during the design, construction and operation of assets to achieve better security outcomes and returns on investment.

Importantly, SABRE allows organisations in a variety of vertical sectors – including education, retail and healthcare – to evidence their commitment to security and communicate their ability to manage security risks such that they can provide valuable assurance to tenants, insurers, investors, regulators and planning authorities, etc.
