Sir Andy Marsh QPM appointed Chief Inspector at HMICFRS

Sir Andy has been the CEO of the College of Policing since September 2021. He was previously Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police (from 2016 through until 2021) and Hampshire Constabulary (2013-2016). Sir Andy was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal back in 2018 and was knighted in 2024 for services to policing.

He succeeds Michelle Skeer OBE QPM, who was appointed to the role on an interim basis in April this year.

Pivotal moment 

Speaking about his appointment, Sir Andy Marsh explained: “I’m honoured to be appointed Chief Inspector at what is a pivotal moment for policing and the Fire and Rescue Service. Throughout my career, I’ve seen the difference that independent inspection can make in helping to keep our communities safe.”

Sir Andy continued: “The Inspectorate’s work is highly regarded, but we can never be complacent. My immediate focus is on listening so that I can understand what works well and what we might do even better.”

Further, Sir Andy commented: “Policing is entering a period of significant change, while there are also important opportunities for reform across the Fire and Rescue Services. The Inspectorate will be at the heart of that, playing a vital role in providing independent inspection designed to support improvement in the public interest.”

In addition, Sir Andy noted: “I would like to thank Michelle Skeer for her leadership of HMICFRS since April. As I start my role at the inspectorate, I look forward to hearing from and meeting with many of you in the weeks and months ahead.”

Experience and wisdom

Referencing the appointment, Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jones said: “I congratulate Sir Andy Marsh on his appointment. He brings experience and wisdom to this role, which will be invaluable as we drive forward the biggest reforms to policing in two centuries. I also want to thank Michelle Skeer for her leadership since April. I have personally really enjoyed working with her.”
