SRI survey focuses on ‘the role of the modern security manager’

THE SECURITY Research Initiative (SRI) is a rolling programme of research conducted by Perpetuity Research, with each year producing a separate study. The latest study is focused on the role of the modern security manager and practising industry professionals are now invited to contribute their views.

The aim of this current project is to explore the security manager’s role, whether employed by a solutions supplier or in-house by a corporate organisation and, more specifically, to assess how security managers view themselves.

Traditionally, security has been all about the protection of assets. The role of the security manager in that scenario has been well – albeit narrowly – defined. Ultimately, it was all about protection. Historically, security managers have been marginalised from key decision-making roles in organisations. More recently, though, there has been a revision in thinking.

Security is now being viewed as an enabler, duly helping organisations to fulfil their objectives via the effective management of risk. There’s also the ‘new’ concept of Enterprise Security Risk Management, which has (seemingly) yet to be widely adopted. Certainly, some argue that business skills are now every bit as important as security skills, perhaps even more so. Is this the case? How have recent trends impacted the role of the security manager?

Perpetuity Research is seeking the views of today’s security professionals in order to better understand the obstacles faced by security managers/directors. What does modern security management look like in a post-COVID world?

The readers of Security Matters are invited to share their views, anonymously, via an online survey. The survey itself is open to any type of security professional/expert. The questions ask about factors that influence the security budget and how effective security really is in the real world, in addition to whether there are similarities between in-house and contracted security managers and also factors that are important when purchasing security.

The survey takes approximately ten-to-15 minutes to complete. The deadline for responses is Friday 11 March.

All participants are given the opportunity to automatically receive a free copy of the research findings once the report is published (which is scheduled for Autumn 2022).
