Paxton points towards energy savings realised by Net2 solution

WITH OFGEM outlining that the energy price cap will increase by 5% starting this month, Paxton has pointed out the fact that the company offers access control systems designed to help save energy in buildings thanks to the use of smart features. Not only is there a positive environmental impact, but host organisations can also save money.

Paxton’s Net2 is a PC-based access control system that’s ideal for granting or restricting access to a building. The system comes with functionality that provides a simple way in which to save energy.

Many appliances still use energy when on standby mode or due them being left on accidentally. This ‘phantom’ energy usage can contribute to around 30% of the average energy bill.

‘Triggers and Actions’ is a powerful feature offered by Net2. In essence, it’s a series of rules that enable site activities and can support lower energy consumption when implemented correctly.

Steve Woodbridge, Paxton’s global training manager, explained: “Facility managers can set an event within Net2 software to automatically switch off appliances. By using the ‘Triggers and Actions’ feature, lighting or heating systems can be set to turn off when the last person leaves the building. This avoids appliances being left on after working hours and saves energy.”

Energy-saving readers

The Net2 Proximity energy-saving reader is another useful option. It can act like a power switch to help save energy in a simple and automated way. When used in conjunction with the Net2 software, building managers can easily tailor access privileges for anything up to 50,000 end users and manage access to energy-intensive appliances.

Woodbridge continued: “In some industries, such as in the manufacturing sector, there are machines that consume a high-level of energy. Site managers can use Net2 to afford access only to those employees who are trained to use this form of equipment.”

He went on to state: “The energy-saving readers are specially designed with a cover to retain a user’s card, which turns the power on and off. The product can be installed on high-energy consuming machines. Building managers can use Net2 to ensure power will only come on when a valid user card is inserted.”

No unauthorised access

In conclusion, Woodbridge informed Security Matters: “When an individual leaves a room and takes out the card, the machines will automatically turn off as it’s like switching off the power. This prevents any unauthorised access and energy wastage. It also ensures the machines are always switched off when not in use. That’s the default position.”
