Mitie awarded five-year security services contract by HMRC

FOLLOWING ON from a competitive procurement process, Mitie has secured a new contract with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to provide security services across 40 sites nationwide, including 12 Government hubs from Glasgow to Belfast and Leeds to London.

Due to begin in June, the contract – which is valued at approximately £15 million per annum – will run for five years with the option for an extension to the total of ten years. This builds on Mitie’s experience as the sole provider of security for HMRC since services were combined under a single provider some five years ago.

The new contract witnessed Mitie continuing to support HMRC’s ten-year transformation programme, which aims to modernise the organisation’s offices and buildings and make better use of technology. Mitie will enhance its security intelligence offer by developing a dedicated Security Operations Centre specifically for HMRC.

Further, the company is going to roll-out its digital risk management tool to digitise and streamline the security risk and threat profile assessment process. Through the data-driven software, Mitie’s specialist security analysts will be able to manage and continually update the risk profile across HMRC’s estate in real-time and in response to intelligence on changes in local and national threat levels, thereby enabling faster identification of potential threats.

Apprentice cohort

Importantly, Mitie has committed to taking on 75 apprentices for the contract, duly aligning with the Government’s target to increase apprenticeship achievement in the UK. Mitie’s own commitment is to have 5% of its workforce in ‘earn and learn’ positions as a member of ‘The 5% Club’.

HMRC awarded this contract following Mitie’s reappointment to the Crown Commercial Service Framework for Security (RM6257) in October 2022, signifying its commitment to providing security services to the Government and, indeed, the wider public sector.

Extensive knowledge

Jason Towse, managing director of business services at Mitie, explained: “To have this contract continued for up to ten more years is recognition of the successful work Mitie has undertaken with HMRC. Having gained extensive knowledge on HMRC’s estate over the last five years, we now look forward to continuing to support HMRC’s transformation by developing our services and focusing on an intelligence-led approach to security alongside deployment of the latest forward-thinking technology.”

Clare Robinson, deputy director for workplace policy and plans at HMRC, responded: “We are pleased to confirm that, following a robust and competitive process, we have signed a new contract for the provision of security services with Mitie Security. HMRC looks forward to working with the company once again in delivering a high standard of security provision for HMRC’s estate throughout the UK.”

IFM contract with London South Bank University Group

Mitie has also been awarded a new £50 million contract with the London South Bank University (LSBU) Group to deliver integrated facilities management services including security, maintenance, cleaning and waste management to six LSBU and South Bank College sites for a five-year period, with the option of extending for an additional two. South Bank College sits within the LSBU Group.

The contract will see Mitie deliver these services across all of LSBU’s sites, including its Southwark, Croydon and Havering campuses. Along with the LSBU estate, Mitie’s services will also extend to South Bank College campuses in Clapham, Brixton and Nine Elms.

This new partnership with Mitie marks the first time that all facilities management services across LSBU and South Bank College campuses will be brought together under one provider, in turn delivering consistency across all of the sites.

Mitie’s approach to social value and investing in skills will be central to the contract. Part of this includes developing and upskilling colleagues through apprenticeship programmes, with the intention to also offer employment through apprenticeships for LSBU and South Bank College students post-graduation. In addition to this, Mitie will be introducing a work experience scheme for eight local residents from underrepresented groups. The eight-week programme will offer hands-on experience in a range of disciplines – from management to engineering – for local people,.

Mitie’s decarbonisation commitment will also be showcased, with only electric vehicles being used on the contract. Along with this, Mitie will also be bringing technology to the fore, including its Mozaic software, which optimises workspace performance, giving a full oversight of Mitie’s service delivery and management by showing key data such as job status, time to complete and first-time fix rate for all tasks undertaken across the LSBU’s sites.

Data gathered by the software can be filtered by site, building and asset, and can also be used to generate insights to identify areas for improvement in order to save money and provide better services for the LSBU.
