Cabinet reshuffle sees Shabana Mahmood appointed Home Secretary

IN THE wake of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner’s resignation from Government as a result of breaching the ministerial code, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has orchestrated a cabinet reshuffle which sees Shabana Mahmood succeed Yvette Cooper in the role of Home Secretary. Cooper now becomes Foreign Secretary, taking over from David Lammy (who has been appointed as the new Deputy Prime Minister).

Mahmood has served as the Labour MP for the Birmingham Ladywood constituency since 2010. She graduated from Lincoln College (at the University of Oxford) with a degree in law back in 2002.

Mahmoud is a qualified barrister specialising in the subject of professional indemnity law. She worked at 12 King’s Bench Walk from 2003 to 2004 and at Berrymans Lace Mawer from 2004 until 2007.

Following Labour’s victory at the 2024 General Election, Mahmood was appointed Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, subsequently implementing an early release scheme for thousands of prisoners in a bid to reduce prison overcrowding.

At the General Election, Mahmood was re-elected with a decreased share of 42.5% of the vote and a majority of 3,421. She had been challenged by independent candidate Akhmed Yakoob, whose campaign focused on support for Palestine. Yakoob finished second behind Mahmood with 12,137 votes.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department has overall responsibility for all Home Office business, including an overarching responsibility for the departmental portfolio and oversight of the ministerial team, the cabinet, the National Security Council, public appointments and, of course, oversight of the Security Service.
