BSIA to rename Best Newcomer accolade in memory of Gaby Hutchinson

THE BRITISH Security Industry Association (BSIA) is set to rename its Best Newcomer category at the British Security Awards in memory of security operative Gaby Hutchinson who died in the course of duty last December.

Hutchinson, who worked as a dog handler for a BSIA member company, was on duty with dog Coco on the night of the Asake concert at the O2 Academy, Brixton in London on 15 December and became caught up in the ensuing incident, tragically passing away on 19 December.

The Best Newcomer category, which celebrates a new security operative who has shown outstanding promise in their chosen career, is awarded to the winner of the regional finalists from the security personnel categories of the Trade Association’s annual awards scheme.

From 2023, the award will now be renamed ‘The Gaby Hutchinson Award (Best Newcomer)’, with the incumbent winner announced on the national stage on Wednesday 21 June at the Grand Connaught Rooms in central London.

Community-led approach

Mike Reddington, CEO at the BSIA, explained: “Along with members of the security community, we were devastated when we heard the terrible news of Gaby’s passing. The security industry prides itself on its community-led approach to the companies it represents and, more importantly, the people who work tirelessly on a daily basis to keep people, property and places professionally protected.”

Reddington continued: “Gaby was one such person and played a vital role in the sector. It’s our duty to keep Gaby’s name alive and to remember the role that was played. We hope that, by presenting the Best Newcomer award in perpetuity in Gaby’s name, this will go some way towards achieving that goal.”

Passion for caring

Phoebie Turley, Gaby’s partner, stated: “Gaby had the kindest soul. Gaby was known for helping others, constantly buying people stuff to make them smile, being a bit too cheeky and being a protector. Gaby worked as a carer before becoming a dog handler. Indeed, Gaby has always had that strong passion to care and help others, and I know that trait shone through until the end.”
