BSI launches certification to build trust in digital ID verification

THE BRITISH Standards Institution (BSI) has launched a service to help organisations comply with the latest version (Gamma 0.4) of the UK Government’s Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF) and build confidence in digital verification services such as digital identification checks for employment screening, which help individuals to securely prove their identity, personal information or eligibility online.

UK DIATF establishes the official framework for the deployment of trusted digital verification services in the UK market, aiming to make such services easier and safer to use, as these become more critical for businesses and Government-related services.

The BSI’s new certification scheme service is now positioned to support organisations in demonstrating compliance with the latest version of UK DIATF requirements, thereby helping to inspire trust and confidence in digital verification services.

Organisations certified by the BSI can demonstrate that their digital identity and attribute services meet high standards for security, privacy and reliability. This will allow individuals and organisations in sectors such as financial services, healthcare, the public sector, the legal domain, technology, education and more to confidently use and share digital identities and attributes across different services.

Data (Use and Access) Act 2025

The launch follows the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 achieving Royal Assent in June. This establishes a formal legal framework for digital verification services, helping to move the DIATF beyond its previous pilot phase into full implementation and setting new standards for how data is used, shared and protected across sectors.

Carlos Pérez Ruiz, global head of digital trust product certification at the BSI, said: “As digital verification services become increasingly vital across industries and Government, trust will be critical to their successful adoption. In light of the new legal framework, we stand ready to help organisations demonstrate their commitment to trusted, secure and privacy-focused digital identity solutions.”

He added: “The formalisation of the UK DIATF marks a turning point for the sector and sets a new benchmark for digital trust. We’re proud to play a key role in shaping the UK’s digital future through our certification service.”
