CHARTER GLOBAL has become the first manufacturer of security roller shutters to meet the Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175 Issue 8 G category certification. After recent independent testing conducted by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), the Obexion MDG security shutters have achieved G5, G10 (SR7) and G15 levels of approval.
The Building Research Establishment’s Loss Prevention Standard LPS 1175 Issue 8 comprises a range of security ratings with test requirements of ascending intensity. As the tool sets used to attack grow in size and power, the length of time to delay an attack also ramps up as the certification levels increase.
There’s a notable change in LPCB testing from the E category to the G category. In addition to the increase in tool set power ratings from 18 V to 54 V, the introduction of a 3.7 kW petrol grinder and a four-tonne trolley jack demands a significantly higher level of resistance to attack.
In addition to this, the number of attackers for G testing increases to two, demonstrating a more professional approach to the attack and meaning that two sets of tools can be in use for the attack at the same time.
Major milestone
Roger Humphreys, founder and managing director of Charter Global, informed Security Matters: “This is a major milestone for Charter Global. We’re delighted to be the first company to achieve the LPS 1175 G-level security ratings for a roller shutter, making it the most secure roller shutter ever certified to this standard. This certification means that the product can be used for the highest security applications worldwide.”
Humphreys added: “Our product development and design teams have overcome various challenges to achieve such a unique design. Thanks to our dedicated in-house manufacturing facility, we’re able to ensure that the Obexion MDG is of the highest quality and security level.”
As is the case with other Obexion security shutters, the MDG version features Charter Global’s LockDown technology, meaning that the shutter cannot be forced open, even when partly deployed, in turn maintaining its security rating without the need for auxiliary locking.
This product range is specifically designed to protect sites of extreme security sensitivity, such as defence sites, top security Government facilities and research laboratories, including those using toxins, pathogens and radiological materials.
New guide
Charter Global has produced a new booklet to give guidance on specifying ultra-high level security within new and existing buildings. The document compares its LPS 1175 security shutters to National Protective Security Authority-certified shutters.
Importantly, the guide covers key differences between the LPS 1175 security ratings, how to assess what security shutters are suitable for a given building and practical insights into layering strategies and system compatibility.
