THE SKILLS Centre, one of the UK’s leading vocational training companies, has joined forces with security companies G4S, OCS and TSS Security to offer free Security Industry Authority (SIA)-accredited training and guaranteed interviews for jobs at the Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham during August.
More than 200 jobs will be available through the scheme, offering those who are unemployed the chance to take part in a free, two-week SIA-certified training programme.
Commenting on the scheme, Jon Howlin (CEO of The Skills Centre) said: “The Skills Centre has a great base in the West Midlands from which we’ve been predominantly offering training for construction workers. When we were approached by United by Birmingham and these well-respected security businesses to deliver this key training, we jumped at the chance.”
Howlin continued: “We have brought in qualified training experts in the security profession to deliver the Level 2 Award for door supervisors in the private security industry, allowing trainees to gain their SIA licence, as well as offering Level 3 Awards in Emergency First Aid at Work.”
Further, Howlin noted: “We’re proud to be working in the West Midlands on this scheme and are looking forward to welcoming as many people as we can through our doors to become part of the Commonwealth Games. It’s a great opportunity to afford previously unemployed trainees the chance to learn new skills and forge a new career path.”
Building new careers
Martin Leeder, strategic operations director at TSS Security, explained: “The Skills Centre has an excellent reputation as a trainee provider of choice. It’s great for us to know that our security personnel will be coming from one of their programmes.”
He stated: “TSS Security is very proud to be providing staff for the Commonwealth Games. We’re also very proud that we can partner in a scheme such as this to help those who have found themselves unemployed a way back into the jobs market, and hopefully build a new and prosperous career going forward.”
In conclusion, Leader observed: “With more than 200 roles to fill, we are looking forward to welcoming the trainees to an interview and then seeing them go on to work at key venues during the Commonwealth Games. It’s a tremendously exciting time for Birmingham and the West Midlands.”
