Mitie agrees terms on five-year contract to deliver security for NATS

MITIE HAS agreed the Terms and Conditions on a new five-year contract worth several million pounds to deliver fully integrated facilities management services – including security – for NATS, the UK’s leading provider of air traffic control services. There’s an option in place to extend the contract period for a further two years.

Every year, NATS handles 2.4 million flights and 250 million passengers in the UK’s designated airspace. Among its other responsibilities, NATS provides air traffic navigation services to aircraft flying through UK controlled airspace and at numerous UK and international airports.

Under the new contract, Mitie will provide NATS with a suite of FM services, including security, critical engineering, energy and controls, grounds maintenance, logistics, waste management and cleaning in addition to targeted project work.

Encompassing NATS’ Corporate Technology Centre in Whiteley through to its Air Traffic Control Centres in Swanwick and Prestwick, airport towers at locations such as Heathrow, Stansted and Glasgow International and even its communication, navigation and surveillance sites located throughout the country, Mitie will deliver a fully integrated service across the length and breadth of the UK. Part of this will include the provision of engineering services to maintain critical infrastructure that supports around 8,000 flights per day.

Mozaic software

Mitie is bringing the latest technology to this contract, including the Mozaic software, which optimises workspace performance, in turn affording a full oversight of Mitie’s performance and management of the contract.

Mozaic highlights key data such as a given job’s status, the time to complete and the first-time fix rate for all tasks being undertaken on the contract. Data gathered by the software can be filtered by site, building and asset and may be used to generate insights that identify areas for improvement. Subsequently, this drives cost efficiencies and service enhancements for NATS.

Using its decarbonisation expertise, Mitie’s ‘Plan Zero’ team will be working on the contract to identify areas for carbon saving, with electric vehicles being used by colleagues wherever possible. The introduction of sustainable uniforms is also under discussion.

Aviation sector expertise

This contract win with NATS builds on Mitie’s aviation expertise developed through a range of projects at various UK airports including Heathrow, Manchester, Gatwick and Bristol.

Simon Venn, managing director of technical services at Mitie, explained: “We are very proud to be supporting NATS’ infrastructure and also to be playing our part in keeping the 250 million passengers who cross the UK’s airspace every year safe and secure.”

Tim Bullock, chief procurement officer and director of property at NATS, responded: “Following a thorough tender process and a market assessment, we are now delighted to be partnering with Mitie for the provision of facilities management services. Mitie’s compelling proposition ensures a collaborative approach and a smooth transition between our facilities suppliers. This move helps to support our strategy through to 2040, which is all about offering a safe service, an inclusive and diverse culture, a carbon-negative future and, ultimately, a sustainable business model.”
