Counter Terrorism Policing-endorsed Security Specialists Register now live

BUSINESSES AND organisations can now access a Counter Terrorism Policing-endorsed register of protective security specialists, developed as part of new measures set out in response to the Manchester Arena terror attack.

If organisations or venue management teams need counter-terrorism protective security and preparedness advice or detail around technical implementation, the new Security Specialists Register (available to purchase via the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists) now offers access to a wide-ranging pool of verified expertise operational across multiple disciplines.

The overriding aim is to strengthen the UK’s protective security and organisational preparedness. Enquiries and expressions of interest from those parties wishing to join the Security Specialists Register are being welcomed.

The Security Specialists Register has been developed by the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists and the National Counter Terrorism Security Office – itself a specialist unit within Counter Terrorism Policing – and will be administered by the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Informed decisions

Jon Savell (senior national co-ordinator for Protect and Prepare) said: “Our highest mission is protecting people in the UK and ensuring that businesses and organisations know how to keep their premises secure is a key part of that. This new Security Specialists Register will empower organisations and venue management teams to make informed decisions about protective security and preparedness thanks to specialist advice from individuals who really understand this operating environment.”

Savell continued: “Industry feedback was very clear that organisations want to be able to access professional and credible advice. Counter Terrorism Policing endorses the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists because it only accepts membership after vetting the competence of those seeking inclusion on the lists of specialists being held on file.”

Further, Savell noted: “It’s similar to other more familiar professional registers. Ones that show surgeons, accountants or structural engineers are properly accredited. It means you can trust the advice you’re being given is backed by us and other experts.  It provides that same reliable, peer‑reviewed assurance for security specialists who’ve been rigorously and independently assessed.”

Code of Professional Conduct

The members of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists included on the Security Specialists Register are bound by a Code of Professional Conduct.

This will provide access to trusted and competent specialists, assurance that individuals meet recognised standards, confidence that members are bound by that Code of Conduct and a straightforward way in which to identify qualified counter-terrorism protective security support.

As reported by Security Matters, the introduction of the Security Specialists Register follows on from the launch of a new Ofqual qualification in Counter-Terrorism Protective Security and Preparedness.
