Mitie lands two-year security contract extension at Birmingham Airport

MITIE HAS finalised a two-year extension for its security solutions contract with Birmingham Airport, in turn building on a long-standing business partnership that now spans more than 13 years.

Supporting one of the UK’s busiest airports, which welcomed a record-breaking 13.6 million passengers last year, Mitie will continue to play a critical role in maintaining safe and efficient on-site operations. The contract covers a range of essential security services across the airport’s footprint.

In terms of the fine detail, the contract extension will see an additional 60 security officers join Mitie’s existing team, ensuring that security remains a top priority in day-to-day operations at the airport. Mitie will also provide security for construction-related activities as the transformation of Birmingham Airport’s terminal continues.

Visible deterrence

The contract extension also includes the deployment of four new security vehicles, strengthening visible deterrence, enabling rapid incident response and facilitating seamless co-ordination across the airport estate.

Commitment to the local community will also continue, with ongoing support for Birmingham Airport’s chosen charity, namely the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Mitie colleagues have already raised more than £38,000 for the charity through sponsored events including the business both supporting and taking part in Birmingham Airport’s ‘Race the Plane’ challenge (ie cycling upwards of 4,800 miles in just over ten hours to beat a plane flying to Cancun).

Outstanding commitment

Gary Culloden, managing director for security at Mitie, commented: “Our continued partnership with Birmingham Airport recognises the outstanding commitment of our security officers, all of whom help to keep the airport running safely day in, day out. As we welcome new colleagues to the team, we look forward to strengthening our capability on the ground and equipping them with specialised training so that all passengers can travel with confidence.”

Caroline Milnes, head of aviation security at Birmingham Airport, stated: “Mitie has been a partner of Birmingham Airport for over 13 years. This long-standing relationship strengthens our existing security measures and enhances the mitigations we have in place, thereby ensuring that our customers can travel safely and with confidence.”
